Today was the day that I picked up my share of locally grown and milled wheat from Urban Grains. This grain was grown at Cedar Isle Farm in Agassiz and milled at Anita’s Organic Grain & Flour Mill in Chlliwack here in BC. To really get the full story, check out the Urban Grains blog, but basically 200 shares were sold as part of the CSA, with each share to be worth 20 kg of milled wheat: 5 kg Winter Triticale, 5 kg Hard Red Spring and 10 kg Hard Red Winter(because of the stellar BC summer, we actually got a little bit more, roughly another kilo of the Spring). This was a very interesting project to be part of because here in BC, there is little wheat grown for human consumption, I’m sure mostly due to the fact that the farmer would be paid next to nothing to produce it – here the farmer was paid a full $1/lb. Wheat has been one of those items that just wasn’t available locally, but maybe with thanks to the people involved with this project, maybe we will start to see more of it around.

each of these bags carried about 600 kg of wheat
